Mood Swings & Coffee

Embracing the ups and downs with every sip

The Brain Behind the Blog (Literally.)

Hi, I’m Michelle — writer, overthinker, caffeine enthusiast, and reluctant connoisseur of mood swings. Welcome to Mood Swings and Coffee, where the highs are HIGH, the lows are… well, yikes, and the in-betweens are powered by coffee and self-deprecating humor.

I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in my 30s after years of riding emotional rollercoasters without a seatbelt or a map. (Spoiler: turns out I wasn’t just “quirky with commitment issues.”) Now, I write to make sense of the madness — and hopefully help others feel a little less alone while I do.

So Why This Blog?

Because mental illness is serious business, but that doesn’t mean we can’t laugh about the ridiculous stuff too — like signing up for pottery classes at 2am during a hypomanic streak or crying in the grocery store over the wrong kind of hummus.

This blog is a space for all the weird, messy, beautiful moments of living with bipolar disorder. The real stories. The crashes and comebacks. The awkward therapy moments. The manic shopping sprees. The wild adventure of managing mental health while adulting-ish. And, yes, lots and lots of coffee.

What You’ll Find Here:

  • Real talk about mental health (no sugarcoating, but a cherry on top)
  • Life hacks from someone who’s tried everything — and still sometimes forgets to shower
  • Reflections on parenting, relationships, and trying to act “normal” in public
  • A little bit of chaos, a little bit of calm, and probably a meme or two

A Final Word:

I’m not a doctor, therapist, or life coach. I’m just a woman with a (mostly) working laptop, a deeply untrustworthy brain, and a whole lot of stories to tell.

So grab your drink of choice — coffee, tea, or whatever your meds allow — and hang out for a while. Let’s ride the highs, survive the lows, and laugh through all the in-betweens together.

Thank you for being here.
Let’s take this journey together.
I’d love for you to share your experiences, too. This community isn’t just about my story—it’s about ours.

Welcome ❤️

Michelle lives in New England with her husband of 10 years, her neurospicy teen daughter, and her fur baby Kane. She is a writer, mental health advocate, and certified human disaster turned story-sharer. When she’s not wrangling her emotions or her neurodivergent kiddo, she’s spending time at her summer home (their seasonal campsite), enjoying the fresh air and watching chipmunks bickering over an acorn while clutching an aggressively large coffee.

Comment Ground Rules (a.k.a. Don’t Be a Jerk)

Look, I love a good conversation. But this is my living room, not a Facebook thread. So here’s how we do things around here:

  • Stay on topic. If it doesn’t relate to the post or the conversation, it’s getting the boot. This isn’t the place to debate your cousin’s politics or fight with strangers.
  • No name-calling. You get one warning. After that, your comments go poof until you can play nice.
  • Don’t be abusive. I don’t care if you’re having a bad day — we all do. But you don’t get to take it out on anyone here.
  • Skip the treatment advice. Please don’t suggest meds, dosages, or anything that sounds like you’re trying to play doctor. It’s risky, it’s not safe, and I’ll have to delete it. Let’s not get anyone hurt (or sued).
  • Leave full names out of it. Talking about other people? Cool. Using their full legal name like you’re submitting a police report? Not so cool. Protect your peace—and your legal standing.
  • Don’t share suicide plans. We can talk about the feelings, the darkness, the struggle. But graphic details or step-by-steps? No. This isn’t the place, and I won’t let this space become unsafe for others who are already hurting.
  • Be kind. Be human. That’s it. You don’t have to agree with everyone (or me), but basic decency is non-negotiable.

Basically: Don’t be a jerk. We’re all doing our best here.

Be cool, stay kind, and don’t make me put on my Mom Voice.

All comments are moderated — sometimes before posting, sometimes after. If you see something nasty that slipped through, please flag it or shoot me a message (moodswingsandcoffee2@gmail.com). I want this to be a safe and supportive space.

Fun Facts About Me

  1. Caffeine is my love language.
If coffee isn’t involved, it’s not happening before noon.
  2. I live life on the bipolar express.
Mania? Depression? Why not both — with snacks.
  3. I’m 40-ish and still figuring it out.
But at least now I cry in cute glasses and comfy clothes.
  4. I’m raising a neurospicy mini-me.
She’s my motivation, my mirror, and my greatest teacher.
  5. I organize my chaos with pretty planners I forget to use.
    But hey, they look productive.
  6. My blog is part therapy, part journal, part “is anyone else like this?”

And if you’re reading this — maybe you are.
